When it’s dry, it fails to “keep good things like water in, and bad things like allergens and bacteria out.” She adds that dry skin is easily inflamed by micro-traumas or abrasion (say, minor cracks) which causes that uncomfortable itch.
“As humidity levels drop all around, our skin is not as good at holding onto moisture,” explains Tiffany J. Libby, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and assistant professor of dermatology at Brown University. “Secondly, as we age, our natural oils in our skin decrease,” and those oils are responsible for maintaining the skin’s protective moisture barrier.
Keeping that barrier intact starts with switching up your hygiene routine. Your first step: Aim to shower for no longer than five to 10 minutes under lukewarm water during the winter,
since hot water only draws moisture out of your skin, says Meghan Feely, M.D, F.A.A.D., a board-certified dermatologist in New Jersey and New York City who serves as a clinical instructor at Mount Sinai. Harsh soaps can also strip the skin of protective and hydrating oils, which is why it’s crucial to use one that’s oh-so moisturizing, replenishing, and gentle.
Throw in regular hot showers and harsh body soaps, and it’s not surprising when skin starts to dry out and feel a bit tight. Keeping your skin hydrated is important all year long and an effective moisturizing routine for your whole body starts before you even step out of the shower.
